The municipality of Luperón is of great historical importance. This town was the first European settlement on the New World in 1494, in what we now know as the historic municipal district of La Isabela. The first mass of the New World was also celebrated here on January 6, 1494, and the institution of the first town hall on April 24 of the same year.

In the municipal district of La Isabela, there is the La Isabela Historical and Archaeological Park. The archaeological area includes other elements of the European settlement such as: the dock, buried under rubble, next to the first shipyard in America; housing area; quarry; ceramic kiln area along with remnants of bricks and tiles.

The municipality of Luperón has a territorial extension of 297.48 squared kilometers and a total population of 20,259 inhabitants, according to the 2012 Population and Housing Census. It comprises the area of ​​the Atlantic Coastal Plains and houses an imposing bay, known as Bahía de Gracia. This bay is a protected area of ​​the municipality, which is within the Hispaniola National Park that constitutes the most important geomorphological formation in the municipality. It has an area of ​​approximately 19 squared kilometers and is used to hold small boats such as yachts and sailboats.

Luperón was known as Blank Cantonal Post until November 18, 1927, which by decree No. 846 gave it the name of the Restoration hero: General Gregorio Luperón. Among its main economic activities are livestock, dairy production and the sowing of some fruits such as watermelon.
